Hagia Sophia is one of the most glorious pieces of art of the historical peninsula and is one of the oldest as well since its history is 1480 years long. Hagia Sophia was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and is the oldest cathedral in the world. It was transformed into a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1453. Nowadays it serves as a museum and hosts guests from all over the world.
Tarihi yarımadanın en heybetli eseri olan Ayasofya, 1480 yıllık tarihi ile aynı zamanda en eski yapılardan bir tanesi. Bizans İmparatoru I. Justinyen tarafından inşa ettirilen ve günümüzde dünyanının en eski katedrali olma özelliğini taşıyan Ayasofya, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in 1453 yılında İstanbul’u fethinin ardından camiye dönüştürüldü. Günümüzde ise bir müze olarak hizmet veriyor ve tüm dünyadan misafirlerini ağırlıyor.
The building that exists today has been built instead of the cathedral which was burned twice due to riots. For this reason, it is named as 3rd Hagia Sophia. The construction date of the first Hagia Sophia goes back to year 360.
Günümüzde varolan bina aslında iki defa isyanlar sebebiyle yıkılan katedralin yerine yapılmıştır, bu yüzden 3. Ayasofya olarak adlandırılır. Birinci Ayasofyanın yapım tarihi ise 360 yılına kadar uzanmaktadır.
The human figured mosaics were covered by a finishing coat after conquest of Istanbul by the Ottoman Empire, the ones without human figures were left same and 4 minarets were added to the structure by time. When Hagia Sophia was transformed into a museum in 1935, the mosaics under the finishing coat came in view in an unharmed status and the inner structure of the piece of art still preserves its aesthetic concept after hundreds of years.
Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun İstanbul’u alışının ardından insan figürlü mozaiklerin üzeri ince bir sıva ile kapatılmış, insansız olanlar ise aynı şekilde tutulmuş ve zaman içinde yapıya 4 adet minare eklenmiştir. Ayasofya 1935 yılında müzeye çevrilirken ince sıvanın altında kalan mozaikler de zarar görmemiş şekilde ortaya çıkmıştır ve eserin iç yapısı yüzlerce yıl sonra hala aynı estetik anlayışı korumaktadır.
