The German Fountain is a historical fountain which is located right across the Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed I in Sultanahmet Square, Istanbul. It was presented as a gift to Istanbul and the Sultan by German Emperor Wilhelm II. The Fountain was built in Germany, and mounted in its place in Istanbul in 1901. This fountain is an example of Neo-Byzantine architecture, and the interior of its dome is adorned with mosaics which were painted with gold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"German_Fountain\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The German Fountain was dedicated to the Emperor\u2019s second visit to Istanbul in 1898, who visited Turkey three times.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alman \u00c7e\u015fmesi, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019ye \u00fc\u00e7 kez gelen imparatorun 1898\u2019de istanbul\u2019a ikinci kez geli\u015finin an\u0131s\u0131na ithaf edilmi\u015ftir.<\/p>\n

The German Fountain, resting on a high base, has an octagonal structure. There is a dome above the water reservoir, which sits on eight pillars. There is one medallion in the arch stonework connecting each of the pillars. In four of these medallions, Abd\u00fclhamid II’s\u00a0tughra (Sultan’s signature) is written on green background, and in other four Wilhelm’s symbol “W” is written on a Prussian blue background. Also, over “W” there is a crown and below it a “II” is written.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bronze inscription on the reservoir which is under a magnificent dome carried by dark green pillars, which was written in German reads “German Kaiser Wilhelm II endowed this fountain, in thankful remembrance of his visit in 1898 autumn, to the Ottoman Sultan Abd\u00fclhamid II”.<\/strong><\/p>\n
