It has doors at the ground level at two sides.” The history of the Maiden’s Tower, which is located off Salacak coast and near the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus, goes back to the Byzantine period in 300 B.C.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a popular legend, the Maiden’s Tower has been built by a king who loved his daughter very much to protect her. According to a prophecy, his daughter would reportedly be poisoned and killed by a snake in her eighteenth birthday, and thus, the king has thought that he could protect his daughter from snakes in this structure located in the middle of the sea. However, the king who brought his daughter a basket of fresh fruits for her eighteenth birthday did not know that a snake was hidden inside the basket. After all, the dark prophecy has come true, and the young princess has died in her father’s arms.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaving aside the legends, the Maiden’s Tower has actually been used for long time to collect taxes from the ships passing through the Bosphorus. The Tower that had been used to defend the Anatolian Side thanks to its location in the Byzantine and Ottoman eras alike has also been used as a lighthouse to guide the ships passing through the Bosphorus for the same reason.<\/strong><\/p>\n
