Concept of Culture Capital of Europe has been pronounced first in 1980’s. Such title has been given to one of the cities of EU member countries in the period of 1985-2000. In 2000, it has begun to name as Culture Capital of Europe more than one city in the same year as well as the cities of the countries that are nominees as the member of EU due to new millennium. Istanbul’s travel for being a Culture Capital of Europe has begun referring to the decision of naming the cities of the nominated members of EU due to new millennium. Istanbul is a privileged city among the world's metropoles due to its geographic position and its culture heritage of thousands of years.Young and dynamic population makes the city which reflects Turkey one of the most dynamic cities on earth owing to their creative energy.

Reflection of culture consciousness improved particularly within last two decades may be seen in the culture life of the city. Istanbul city is specialized as culture and art center attracting not only the natives of Istanbul but the whole world every other day. 21st century will be the century of the cities.Cities form a global culture by reinvigorating their identities, taking their cultures further and sharing their gains.
Therefore, cities entitled as Culture Capital of Europe enrich the world culture by their contributions. In 2010, when Istanbul is granted the title of Culture Capital of Europe, Europe will take one more important step ahead to understand the others and will discover in there its own roots. For becoming a successful Culture Capital of Europe, projects needs to be adopted and well-attended support of Istanbulites.
